Q: What are the limitations on 10g Express?

Oracle 10g Express, while allowing you to enjoy many of the most important features of a full scale Oracle 10g database, does have inherent limits. It will only utilitze a maximum of 1 GIG RAM and will never use more than a single processor. This is not to say it will not perform multiple transactions simultaneously, or can not be installed on a multi-processor server, simply that it will employ only one processor and a maximum of 1 GIG of RAM. It is also limited to 4 GIG of storage space. Only 1 Oracle 10g Express database may be installed per physical machine.

When the time does come to move into more robust Oracle deployments (10g Standard, Enterprise, etc...) Oracle 10g Express will allow you to do so from your existing database once you have upgraded your license.

Q: How long does activation take?

A: Averages 2 to 24 hours.

Q: I have a web site with another provider that I would like to continue using, can you configure my applications to run as part of my existing site?

Yes. While you can host unlimited domains and subdomains directly on your server, if you would like your applications to run as part of an existing site you already operate, we can configure your applications to do so. For example, if your current site is "www.mysite.com", we can configure your application(s) to run as "appname.mysite.com", "mysite.com/appname", etc....

Q: Do you offer any shared packages?

A: No. There are a number of companies offering affordable shared packages and various other services that may be better suited to your needs in terms of development and deployment. You can find a listing of APEX hosting providers here.

Deciding which database edition and which provider is needed to insure that you reach your goals requires serious investigation. Our own offerings are targeted to combine minimal financial risk, a fully dedicated platform, and the Oracle 10g Express Database. For customers who have elected for our particular service, it has proven an ideal solution. Whether it meets your particular needs requires reviewing all of the available options.

Q: I'm not versed in , Linux, Apache, Windows 2003, etc...I'm just interested in APEX 3.1.2. Is there any server management or configuration that would be required on my part?

A: No, none. You do have full administrative access to the server and database if you wish to perform certain functions, create custom configurations, as well as to simply offer maximum control. However, the server is fully managed and ready-to-go upon delivery. You can simply focus on APEX 3.1.2.

Q: How do you configure the database?

A: We configure your database using the recommended guidelines to insure reliability, including enabling archive log mode, multiplexing redo log and control files, moving the Flash Recovery Area to a seperate disk / area, as well as creating automated backups. All server are configured @ RAID 1 to further protect against media failure. We also secure the administrative areas to your specifications as well.

Q: What don't I get with these packages?

A: Oracle 10g Express is a limited version of Oracle 10gR2. You need to know if your application requires the advanced features of the full 10gR2 editions. If you do require such features, please review some of the other providers listed here. As you will see, most are indeed explicit as to the database platform. If not, enquires should be made to verify platform. PDF printing is not available in our standard plans.

ABOUT UPGRADING TO APEX 3.1.2

In addition to our APEX 3.1.2 hosting packages, if you have one of our Oracle 10g Express Databse hosting packages, Application Outsource UK will upgrade your 10g Express Application Express (which is version 2.x by default) to APEX 3.1.2 upon request.

It is vital that you familiarize yourself with the various changes this entails before deciding to upgrade. You can review many of the changes here.

If you are completely new to Oracle APEX 3.1.2 you will want to review Oracle's APEX / 10g Express quick guide prior to requesting an upgrade. While APEX is a genuinely intuitive and easy-to-use rapid applicaion development tool, it does require a good knowledge of SQL and PL/SQL to be used effectively.

We do provide documentation and basic support, and can even provide professional APEX development services to create custom applications for you if required (charges apply). However, this package is aimed primarily at those who have applications they wish to deploy and are already familiar with APEX 3.1.2.

IBM DB2 EXPRESS-C

For both small to mid-size businesses, IBM DB2 Express-C, which does not share Oracle's limits on data storage and has a far more generous CPU allowance, can offer great value both as a hosted solution as well as installed on-site on your existing infrastructure.

The free, entry-level Express-C edition allowance is twice that of Oracle, allowing 2 GIG of RAM and 2 Processors, and no storage limits. This makes a dedicated hosting option a reasonable investment should you require it. It also makes DB2 Express-C an attractive option for both small and mid size businesses.

While the free, entry-level edition may provide all that is required for you, IBM has the additional benefit of offering a yearly, per-server subscription for less than $3,000 US per server. This yearly subscription allows you to double RAM and Processor limits (4 GIG RAM/4 Processors), as well as provide additional tools and utilize 24x7 support direct from IBM. MICROSOFT SQL SERVER

Microsoft SQL Server is available in Express, Workgroup, Standard, and Enterprise editions. The free, entry-level Express edition is available in both a small-footprint basic edition, as well as a larger, Advanced Edition. The Advanced edition features SQL Server Reporting Services and other additional tools.

Unfortunately, it shares Oracle's Express edition limits regarding memory and storage. One advantage it does enjoy over Oracle is that both SQL Server Express editions can be hosted on a VPS/VDS, a much more cost-effective hosting solution than a fully dedicated server.

MySQL and PostgreSQL

In terms of hosted solutions, dedicated MySQL and PostgreSQL servers are by far the most affordable, if not feature-rich, options. While PostgreSQL offers advanced features not found in MySQL, MySQL enjoys a much larger support base via the MySQL community at large. MySQL is also the most popular for PHP applications.
